The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized draft scope documents for twenty additional chemicals classified as high-priority substances for health and safety risk evaluation. This process is performed under the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act.
The Lautenberg Act, which was implemented after the amending of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), requires the EPA to release a scope document for each chemical. The document will list the hazard, exposures, conditions of use, and the potentially exposed subpopulations.
A notice issued back in December under the Federal Register identifies high-priority chemicals to undergo a three-year evaluation for possible health and environmental risks. The chemicals in the document include:
- 7 Chlorinated Solvents
- 6 Phthalates (hormone-disrupting substances linked to several health issues)
- 4 Flame Retardants
- Formaldehyde
- A Fragrance Additive
- One Polymer Precursor
The finalization of the draft began with 78 submissions during the public comment period when the input was requested back in April. The American Chemical Council (ACC), representing chemical manufacturers, published a statement supporting the continued efforts of implementing the Lautenberg Act. “ACC will continue to support the efficient and effective implementation of TSCA. Successful implementation of this important bipartisan legislation is essential to ensuring protections for human health and the environment.”
The twenty chemicals listed in the document are separate from the first ten chemicals currently being evaluated from a previous assessment. These chemicals are also being evaluated under the Lautenberg Act for potential health and environmental risks.
