The Importance of IP Ratings for Gas Detectors

International Protection Ratings, or IP ratings, are an international standard of classifying products and providing detailed information about their features. When purchasing portable gas detection monitors, these ratings are crucial. Also known as ingress protection ratings, the IP codes highlight the device’s ability to stand up to a variety of environmental conditions that could affect its functionality.

Ratings include the initials “IP” followed by two digits, starting with 0. The first digit designates the device’s protection against solid objects, such as dust. The second digit is its protection level against liquids, like water. A portable gas leak detector rated IP65, for example, is dust-tight and able to withstand high-pressure water jets or heavy rain. So, a detector can be expected to perform in dusty conditions and during exposure to heavy rains. Generally, the higher the IP rating, the more protected the device is against solids and liquids.

How IP Ratings Are Achieved

Manufacturers are allowed to come up with their own system for testing gas detection monitors that result in the product’s IP rating. While some may use one round of testing to achieve an IP rating, others may subject their products to several testing rounds to create statistical evidence to secure the rating. There are also those manufacturers who certify their findings through third parties accredited in the field of portable gas detection equipment.

The first level following the “IP” starts with 0, meaning there is no protection for the device’s electrical conductors, moving parts, or solid foreign objects, such as dust. The highest level, 6, indicates that dust will not enter these important parts of the device and that the gas detector has complete protection against contact of any kind. The second digit, which indicates protection against liquids, also starts with 0, meaning there is no protection against water or other liquid damage. Level 1 devices are protected against vertically dripping water, and as the number increases, the level of protection increases. These levels extend to level 8, meaning that the device can be immersed in water under conditions specified by the manufacturer.

IP Ratings and Conditions

The IP rating can also offer whether the gas detector can be safely used outdoors. An IP22 means that it is effective indoors and protected against falling dirt and water. An IP55 rating is safe for outdoor monitoring and protected against rain, sleet, ice damage, and windblown dust. Additional protection is provided by a device with an IP66 rating, which adds protection against hose-directed water both indoors and outdoors.
