Perimeter Monitoring for Odor Control
Application Overview:
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is a byproduct gas evolved during the treatment of sanitary wastewater. Due to its low odor threshold, in the part- per -billion range, the odor produced by wastewater treatment facilities offends neighboring residents.
H2S may be removed from the effluent gas stream by wet, chemical scrubbing. A two stage scubbin system is used. The first stage used caustic (sodium hydroxide) scrubbing agent, and the second stage uses a bleaching agent, sodium hypochlorite. In other, similar applications, potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide may be used in place of sodium hypochlorite.
Monitoring Requirements:
For this application, the system effluent needs to be monitored after the scrubber in order to control the amount of scrubbing agent chemicals used in the process. Thereby controlling the material and operating costs.
The level of detection is required to bed in the low ppm or high ppb range, the maximum concentrations need to be documented. The H2S monitor should be free from interference from other chemicals in the stream, and from reaction with the high water concentration present in some streams. since the monitor is located in an industrial environment, a weatherproof enclosure may be advisable.
Monitoring Solutions:
ChemLogic 1’s (CL1) instruments can be used to monitor parts-per -billion levels of H2S (0-90ppb & 0-1500ppb). The CL1 comes standard with a NEMA 4x enclosure suitable for outdoor applications. If temperatures reach much higher or lower than the specification of the unit, a heater or cooler may required. A remote data system may also be used to centralize concentration information on a real-time basis. The CL1’s SD card download’s data and can be uploaded to Microsoft Excel. The Cl1 comes standard with Tape Save Mode which allows the customer to optimize their tape usage.
ChemLogic Portable X (CLPx) can be used as a portable monitor to detect H2S at parts-per-billion levels (0-90ppb & 0-1500ppb). The CLPx comes standard with an SD card to store event history, gas concentrations, STEL, faults, etc. The SD card writes to Microsoft Excel for simple reporting.
